Henry Warner Slocum, Union general, 1862-1867. Slocum (1827-1894) was one of the youngest Major Generals in the Union Army in the Civil War. His delay in deploying his forces onto the battlefield at Gettysburg earned him the derogatory nickname Slow Come, but he went on to serve effectively in the western theatre and commanded the first unit to enter the city of Atlanta when it fell to the Union in September 1864. An engraving from volume III of The War with the South : a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 Volumes, 1862-1867.
