Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney, British politician (1886). Sydney (1732-1800) held several important cabinet posts during his political career. The city of Sydney, New South Wales, was named after him by its founder, Arthur Phillip, who had been chosen by Sydney to be the Governor of the first British colony in Australia.
