The naval Battle of Navarino, 20th October 1827, (1893).Artist: J Godfrey
The naval Battle of Navarino, 20th October 1827, (1893). The Battle of Navarino was fought on 20 October 1827, during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829) in Navarino Bay, western Greece (near the Ionian Sea). A combined Ottoman and Egyptian armada was destroyed by a combined British, French and Russian naval force, at the port of Navarino. It is notable for being the last large-scale fleet action in history between sailing ships. An engraving from James Taylor's The Age We Live In: A History of the Nineteenth Century, From the Peace of 1815 to the Present Time, William Mackenzie, (London, 1893).
