William Gifford Palgrave, 1880. After university he went to India and was a lieutenant in the 8th Bombay regiment of the infantry. From 1838-1853 he was involved in missionary work in Southern India. He returned to England in 1861.His work as a diplomat took him to Abyssinia, Egypt and regions within the Ottoman Empire.
