Epsom Race Course, 1940. The first recorded race was held on the Downs in 1661, although it is likely that racing was established much earlier than this. Epsom is referenced in the diary of Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) in 1663 and Charles II (1630-1685) is said to have been a racegoer there. From Flat Racing published by Seeley, Service & Co, Ltd., London, 1940.
