Clive of India programme for the Savoy Theatre, 1934. The Savoy Theatre was the first public building in the world, to be lit entirely by electricity. In 1889, Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901) built the Savoy Hotel next to the theatre and for many years, the Savoy was the home of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Richard's son Rupert D'Oyly Carte (1876-1948) rebuilt and modernised the theatre in 1929.
