Liutenant Verney Lovett Cameron's reception by Katende, 19th century. Sent to Africa in 1873 to assist David Livingstone, Cameron (1844-1894) encountered Livingstone's servants carrying the explorer's dead body. He arranged for Livingstone's papers to be sent back to England and then continued his journey westward. In 1875 he reached the Atlantic, making him the first European to cross equatorial Africa from coast to coast.
