'Dover Castle', Kent, 1823. The strategic importance of Dover has long been recognised. The great Keep, built in the 1180s by King Henry II to provide both security and accommodation, was the strongpoint of the medieval castle. Dover Castle remained a military site until the end of World War II. From A Voyage Around Great Britain Undertaken between the Years 1814 and 1825 by William Daniell.
