The assassination of Henry III of France, 1589. King from 1574, Henry (1551-1589) was assassinated by a Dominican friar, Jacques Clement, for his opposition to the Catholic Holy League. Clement stabbed the king having been allowed access to him on the pretext of having an important message to deliver. Clement was killed by the king's guards and his body was quartered and burned.
