Mungo Park encouraged by the sight of a little flower, late 19th century. Scottish explorer Mungo Park (1771-1806) led two expeditions into the interior of West Africa in an attempt to determine the course of the River Niger. He endured great hardships on both expeditions before he was drowned on his second journey whilst trying to escape from an attack by natives.
