Stephen Gardiner, 16th century Bishop of Winchester, (1825). Gardiner (c1483-1555) was acively involved in diplomacy during the reign of Henry VIII  From. He was rewarded for his service with the Bishopric of Winchester in 1531. Imprisoned during the reign of Edward VI, Gardiner was released and restored as bishop by Mary I, who he also served as Lord Chancellor. Memoirs of the Court of Queen Elizabeth, published in 1825.
