Battle of Changsha, China, World War II, c1939-c1944. The city of Changsha in Hunan province was the site of four separate battles between the Chinese and invading Japanese armies during the Second World War. The first three battles saw Japanese attempts to take the city repelled with heavy casualties, but their fourth offensive, in 1944, succeeded in capturing Changsha. The Chinese retook the city the following year.
