American battleship USS 'Arizona', Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, World War II, 7 December 1941. The 'Arizona' was sunk at its moorings on Battleship Row when Japanese aircraft launched their surprise attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbour. The ship was destroyed by a huge explosion in her forward ammunition magazines shortly after a bomb hit and 1177 of the 1400 crewmen on board at the time were killed. The wreck continued to burn for two days after the attack. The ship's superstructure was removed and scrapped in 1942, but the rest of the vessel remains where it sank as a memorial to those killed.
