Earl of Carnarvon, President of the Society of Antiquaries, 1896. His maiden speech in the House of Lords brought him to the attention of Lord Derby. Derby appointed him Under-Secretary of State for the colonies in 1858 during his second administration, and Secretary of State for the colonies during his third administration. In 1874 he served in Disraeli's government in the same post. In 1884 he became lord lieutenant of Ireland. Away from political life he was interested in arch¾ology. He became fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1877, and was president from 1878 to 1885. From The Life and Times of The Right Honourable The Marquis of Salisbury, K.G., published by J. S. Virtue & Co. Ltd., 1896.
