Prominent figures including Bertrand Russell, Michael Foot, JB Priestley and Canon John Collins were amongst the movement's founder members. At the peak of the controversy over the stationing of cruise missiles at Greenham Common in the 1980s, CND reached the peak of its popularity, with a membership of almost 100,000.
