Montreal, Crusader castle, Shoubak, Jordan. The castle of Montreal was built in 1115 by Baldwin I of Jerusalem. It later passed to Raynald of Chatillon, who used it as a base from which to attack passing caravans. In May 1189 the castle fell to the army of Saladin after a siege lasting almost two years during which the defenders are said to have sold their wives and children for food.
