King Peter I of Serbia watching the retreat of his defeated army, 1914. Suffering from worsening ill health and with the outbreak of the First World War only a month away, Peter (1844-1921) handed over executive control of Serbia's government to his second son, Alexander, in June 1914. In late 1915 Peter was forced to flee into exile as Serbia was defeated by the combined forces of Germany, Austria and Bulgaria.
