John Steinbeck, American novelist, c1939. John Ernst Steinbeck III (1902-1968) won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath, dealing with the plight of family displaced to California by the Oklahoma dustbowls of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Among his other best known works are Of Mice and Men (1937) and East of Eden (1952). In 1962 Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
