John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, Scottish novelist, 1927. Buchan (1875-1940) is best remembered as the author of the adventure novel The Thirty-Nine Steps, published in 1915. He also had a career in government and diplomacy and served as Governor-General of Canada from 1935 until 1940.
