Mr and Mrs Ely Culbertson, American contract bridge players, 1931. Ely Culbertson (1891-1955) played a prominent role in the development of contract bridge in the 1930s, when the game enjoyed a boom in popularity. A well as being one of the best players of bridge of his day, he also taught the game and wrote books and published magazines about it. He married his first wife, Josephine, herself a successful player, in 1923.
