James J Corbett, American boxer, training with Jim Kennedy, 1900. Known as 'Gentleman Jim', James John Corbett (1866-1933) became world heavyweight boxing champion in 1892 when he knocked out John L Sullivan in New Orleans. He succesfully defended his title against Britain's Charley Mitchell in 1894, but retired after losing to another British fighter, Bob Fitzsimmons, in 1897.
