Richard, Duke of Gloucester invited to assume the crown, 1483 (1864). Richard (1452-1485) was invited to assume the crown by the Duke of Buckingham (1455-1483) after the marriage between the late King Edward IV and Elizabeth Grey was declared void by having being brought about by witchcraft and sorcery. Their son King Edward V (1470-1483) was therefore declared illegitimate. Richard accepted and was crowned King Richard III.
