Conscription of German Soldiers for Service in America, c19th century. The Hessians were 18th-century German auxiliaries contracted for military service by the British government. They took their name from the German region of Hesse. The British used the Hessians in several conflicts, including the American Revolutionary War and the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
