'Statuary Gallery, Chatsworth House', c1903. The first house at Chatsworth near Bakewell in Derbyshire was built by Bess of Hardwick (c1527-1608) and her second husband Sir William Cavendish (1505-1557). Building began in 1552, and many additions and alterations were made over the years by its subsequent occupants. Chatsworth House has been the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire since 1687. From Penrose's Pictorial Annual 1903-4, edited by William Gamble. [A. W. Penrose & Co., London, 1903-4]
