Frederic Joliot, French physicist, c1930. The apparatus is a Wilson cloud chamber. Joliot (1900-1958) became assistant to Marie Curie in 1925. In 1926 he married Marie's daughter Irene and in 1935 shared with her the Nobel prize for Chemistry for their work on the synthesis of new radioactive elements.
