The Angel delivering St Peter from prison while the soldiers sleep, 1808. Herod, trying to gain popularity with the Jews, persecuted the early Christian church. He imprisoned Simon Peter but, the night before Peter was to be tried before the people, the Angel of the Lord woke him and led him out of prison while the guards slept. From the Bible (Acts 12:7).
