Punch cartoon on the sinking of the Lusitania, 1915. Artist: Bernard Partridge
Punch cartoon on the sinking of the Lusitania, 1915. A German submarine torpedoed the Lusitania off the Irish coast on 7 May 1915. Although unarmed, she was carrying munitions. 1,198 people lost their lives, of whom 128 were US citizens. This satirical illustration, titled 'Wilful Murder', shows the depth of anti-German feeling two weeks after the tragedy. The German Kaiser proposes a toast To the Day...,  ...of reckoning!, finishes Death, pointing to the gallows. From Punch, 19 May 1915.
