Jons Jacob Berezelius, Swedish chemist, c1890. Berzelius (1779-1848) introduced modern chemical symbols. He discovered the elements selenium, thorium and cerium, and was first to isolate others. He accurately determined atomic weights and established the laws of combination. His discoveries supported John Dalton's atomic theory.
