Bamboo incense holder, China, probably 1602. Artist: Zhu Zhizheng
Ming dynasty reticulated bamboo incense holder with five scholars under a single gnarled pine tree crowding round a table. To one side is a servant preparing tea. Two female servants and two cats are seen playing above three scholars, one is writing on a rock beside a servant, another servant is in a pavilion. There is an inscribed signature of Zhu Zhizheng (alias Zhu Sansang) and the cyclical date probably equates to 1602.
