Carved bamboo carp, China, 2nd half of the 17th century.
Qing dynasty bamboo root carving of a twin-horned dragon-headed carp with its tail up over its head. Some of the roots have been retained as prickly spines and fins. This carving depicts the moment when the carp going up the waterfall changes into a dragon, which was a popular subject in the 17th century. The image of a carp turning into a dragon was symbolic of success in the imperial examinations.
