Jade lotus and fish, Ming dynasty, China, 14th-16th century.
Jade lotus and fish, Ming dynasty, China, 14th-16th century. A pale whitish celadon jade carp-like fish. The fish's fat rounded body is enveloped by a leafy lotus frond held in its mouth. The leaves curl back on the fish's spine and rest on another leaf below. The lotus flower rests on the fish's pointed snout. The underside of the leaves and the fin and gills all have details in low relief. The pale whitish celadon stone has a slight opaque mottling and brown markings.
