Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867), American geophysicist, 1896. The great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, Bache was appointed superintendent of the US Coast Survey in 1843. He was a charter member of the American National Academy of Sciences, and its first President form the institution's foundation in 1863 until his death.
