Cizhou bowl with floral decoration, Northern Song dynasty, China, late 11th-early 12th century.
Cizhou bowl with combed floral decoration, Northern Song dynasty, China, late 11th-early 12th century. A white Cizhou bowl carved through the white slip with an elegant combed flower in 'Zhuluxian' style. This type of ware is named after the town of Zhuluxian where Cizhou pieces of this type were discovered. It is one of two towns on the Chang River in North China buried under twenty feet of mud in a disastrous flood in 1108 but the remains were rediscovered in 1919 and excavated in the early 1920s with pieces of similar type to this being discovered in those remains.
