Jade toad in lotus waiting in ambush, Ming dynasty, China, 1368-1644. A pebble jade of a four-legged toad with blister-like knobbles in relief on its back. The toad is depicted in hiding under a dead lotus leaf waiting to ambush its prey with a lotus leaf gathered round him on which some of the edges have started to die. The lotus leaf is incised on the top with the veins in relief on its underside.
