Jade lotus brushwasher with frog, duck and snail, late Ming dynasty, China, 1550-1644.
Jade lotus brushwasher with frog, duck and snail, late Ming dynasty, China, 1550-1644. A jade group of slightly greyish celadon colour with brown suffusions consisting of a lotus leaf as a water container (the sides curled up, and one end pinched to form a pouring spout), a lotus bud, flower and leaf stems, a small duck, a small frog and a snail under the leaf. These plants and animals combine to form a rebus 'May you have an abundance of sons every year'.
