Blue and white kendi, China, c1279-c1368. Yuan dynasty blue and white kendi with dish-shaped mouth. The lip, neck and shoulder are decorated with three bands; the uppermost of stylized mono-unit key fret round the lip with quatrefoils round the neck and cloud scrolls round the shoulder. The body has a wide band of windswept blackberry vine, the handle a stylized shrimp applique above a band of lotus petals round the base. The spout is of double tubular form and decorated with flaming pearls.
