Nicholas Bacon (1509-1579), English statesman, 1750. A staunch Protestant, Bacon fell out of favour during the reign of Mary I. Under Elizabeth I he was created Lord Keeper of the Great Seal (1558). He was the father of Francis Bacon, the philosopher, scientist and statesman.
