Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell (1857-1941), British soldier, 1900. Baden-Powell offering reassurance that relief is on the way to the besieged town of Mafeking. He won fame as the defender of the town during the Boer War (1899-1902). Mafeking held out against the surrounding Boers for 216 days until relieved by forces commanded by Lord Roberts on 17 May 1900. Baden-Powell later founded the Boy Scouts (1908), Girl Guides (1910) and Wolf Cubs (1916). From Punch, or the London Charavari, 9 May 1900.
