Blue and white seal box, China, 1640-1670.
Blue and white seal box, China, 1640-1670. Large circular pot with lid from the Transitional period. The shallowly domed top is painted in underglaze blue of violet tone with a mandarin behind a cloth-covered table with seven willowy ladies, some of whom are serving while others play musical instruments. In the wide border, about 60 boys are seen in a bamboo grove, some playing musical instruments or playing games. The bottom half is decorated with 30 or so more boys with a lion dog, and one on a hobby horse.
