Ryukyu lacquer plate, Japan, 1700-1730. Circular plate, one of a pair, coloured with brown lacquer on both back and front. The front is decorated with red, blue, green, light brown and gold lacquers. Depicted on one plate are a male and female pheasant standing on a holed rock from which two peony sprays protrude, with bees above and the cavetto with four sprays of flowers in gold between florettes. On the other plate the decoration is of two phoenixes on rock with peonies under a maple tree.
