St Augustine of Hippo (350-430), 19th century.
St Augustine of Hippo (350-430). St Augustine of Hippo is regarded as one of the great fathers of the early Christian church. He was converted to Christianity in 386, and became Bishop of Hippo, in North Africa, in 396. Augustine is shown with a monk's habit under bishop's robes. At his feet is Aristotle whose idea of eternity of matter he refuted.
