'Churchillius; or, an Alarming Sacrifice!', 1887. Artist: Joseph Swain
'Churchillius; or, an Alarming Sacrifice!', 1887. Little Lord Randolph Churchill, in full Roman battledress, bounces on his horse, Retrenchment. This follows what is believed to be Churchill's unintended departure from his office as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Conservative administration. He had resigned in a fit of pique following disputes about defence cuts. However, his popularity dwindled rapidly after this, and although the cartoon suggests he would return to office, he was never offered any other cabinet position. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 12, 1887.
