'The French Andromeda; or, wanted, a Perseus', 1883. Artist: Joseph Swain
'The French Andromeda; or, wanted, a Perseus', 1883. France is chained, like Andromeda, to a rock. In the foaming sea in front of her, Anarchy can be seen having risen from the depths of the ocean. This relates to a crisis of government in France when the majority of the members of the government resigned in protest following the introduction of a Bill that proposed expelling from France all the members of families that had reigned in France. This was as a result of Prince Jerome Napoleon's rather unthreatening attempt to win power after the recent death of the French statesman, Leon Gambetta. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 10, 1883.
