'On the Trail', 1883. Artist: Joseph Swain
'On the Trail', 1883. Justitia, armed with her sword, is followed here by a shrinking Hibernia. During the course of the previous year, the new Chief Secretary for Ireland, Lord Frederick Cavendish, and his Permanent Irish Under-Secretary, Thomas Burke, were murdered whilst taking a walk in the grounds of Dublin's Phoenix Park. Seventeen men had been arrested in connection with this vicious attack and it was hoped that in the course of the trial, clues would be found to other crimes carried out in Ireland. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 24, 1883.
