'Snubbed!', 1883. Artist: Joseph Swain
'Snubbed!', 1883. Spain and Germany are shown taking a walk together, with France scowling jealously in the background. In November 1883, the Crown Prince of Germany visited Spain on a return visit after one made by the King of Spain to Germany. This was the first exchange of visits between the two countries for some 200 years. France, however, were concerned at the growing friendship between Germany and Spain, although, when the King of Spain visited France earlier in the year, he had been received without due ceremony. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 24, 1883.
