'The Irish Guy Fawkes', 1880. Artist: Joseph Swain
'The Irish Guy Fawkes', 1880. This cartoon shows Charles Parnell, the Irish Nationalist leader, creeping past the barrels of the gunpowder of Rebellion, Sedition and Anarchy. There had been much unrest in Ireland, and this had culminated in the murder of Lord Mountmorris in September 1880. Whilst Parnell and his fellow Irish MPs denounced the murder and other crimes, they were so ambiguous in their choice of words that many were led to believe that they were in fact in sympathy with the agitators. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 6, 1880.
