A Daniel Come to Judgement!, 1880. Artist: Joseph Swain
A Daniel Come to Judgement!, 1880. The ghost of Daniel O'Connell is shown telling an armed Irish agitator to lay down his weapon. Just as the new Liberal government celebrated its 1880 election victory, a wave of violence in Ireland was reaching a climax. From America came reports of a new secret society, the Irish Revolutionary Brotherhood, which aimed to free Ireland from English rule. Many acts of violence were taking place and both English and Irish politicians were seemingly unable to reach any agreement that would even begin to satisfy both sides. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 23, 1880.
