At-Bay, 1880. Artist: Joseph Swain
At-Bay, 1880. The British Lion holds a pack of wild dogs at bay. This cartoon relates to an attack in late December 1879 that was made upon the British at Cabul by Afghanistan. Britain's General Roberts withdrew his troops into the shelter of the Sherput Cantonment to await reinforcements. On 23rd December, the Afghans made a further attack, but were driven off.
