My Heart's in the Highlands!, 1888. Artist: Joseph Swain
My Heart's in the Highlands!, 1888. The leader of the Home Rule Party, Charles Parnell, can be seen here setting his sights on the stag in the distance. This cartoon relates to the murders in 1882 of two government ministers in Dublin's Phoenix Park. The Times had, in 1887, published letters which purported to show that Parnell were secretly in support of this kind of violence, even if not directly involved in this particular incident. The government had set up a special judicial tribunal to examine the charges made by The Times, and this is why Parnell is depicted as a deer-stalker. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 1, 1888.
