'The Shadow on the Hills', 1878. Artist: Joseph Swain
'The Shadow on the Hills', 1878. An armed man in a turban, possibly a native sepoy, who represents India stands looking into the distance. 'Afghanistan' is written on the side of a hill in the Northwest Frontier region, (now a part of Pakistan). The lion by his side represents Britain who had moved troops into the area in anticipation of possible trouble in Afghanistan. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 5, 1878.
